He was a glittering sapphire in an otherwise grey dynasty: Arndt von Bohlen und Halbach, the last of the Krupp family, Germany’s largest steel producers. He was the favourite object of hate for Germany’s post-war press: a gay, swishy bird of paradise, who needed the public limelight. He seemed to be as soft as cotton wool, not hard as (Krupp-) steel. His father and his henchmen forced him to renounce his family legacy. He subsequently led a fairytale life, spending his time between Sylt, Marrakesh, the Salzburg Land and Palm Beach, derided as «Germany’s youngest pensioner».
Director André Schäfer («Rock Hudson – Dark and Handsome Stranger») tells the story of the last offspring of a burdened family in a successful and exciting docufiction, in which important contemporaries and friends tell us their views. A both entertaining and thought provoking film.
