Expletive or proud self-identification? Butch for lesbians and fairy for gays: an individual that, because of their behaviour and appearance, reminds people of the opposite sex. Years ago one was a proud fairy in gay circles – with a hint of self-irony, a doubly broken wrist and a hearty cackling laugh. Lesbians dressed as dandies, dykes (in the Berlin of the Weimar Republic) and as strong butch in a lumberjack shirt. «If we are marginalised by society», their motto seemed to be, «why not completely.» Today, all things fairy are frowned upon by many gay men. And the perception of lesbians has changed, too. New masculinity for gays and femininity for lesbians have created barriers: it is not uncommon that some gays or lesbians attempt to create a distance between themselves and visibly gay or lesbian «comrades». Pink Apple promotes a diverse community and attempts to save the honour of fairies and butches.

Butch lesbians examine and challenge society's assumptions about masculinity and femininity and show the courage it takes to be true to oneself. Their struggles reveal how everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, is pressured to conform and measure up to restrictive gender standards.
